Contemporary European Flute Ensemble eWave

    The Contemporary European Flute Ensemble eWave brings together flutists and composers from the European area and is aiming to create and perform a repertoire by European composers. The musical style of eWave is characterised by an extension in sound and in action. Here, we may recognise elements like contemporary playing techniques; exclusive instruments; body-movement; specific stage-settings; and electronic involvement. By working interactively with the composers eWave can continue its musical style throughout their repertoire.

    With the extending creation of the European Community, the rich cultural diversity of Europe activated a process of confrontation, exchange and integration. With the intention to participate this cultural interaction, the eWave ensemble was founded in the summer of 1998, when artistic director Wil Offermans invited eight European flutists for a first rehearsal week to work on his compositions. At this moment the group is working with ten flutists, using the whole range of the flute, including the C-flute, piccolo, alto flute, bass flute, contrabass flute, Thumpy flute, various percussion instruments, water pipes, tubes, whistles, toys and others.

    Project History

    Here below you can find an overview of the main projects that the eWave ensemble has been involved in.

    Creations for flutes and live electronics

      The eWave ensemble has started a project together with Grame, Lyon, and other European partners titled 'eWave, creations for flutes and live electronics'. The project has been aiming for the creation and presentation of five new works involving live-electronics for eWave by five European composers. Each composer has been closely working together with the ensemble while creating their new pieces. The project has been supported by the Programme Culture 2000 of the European Union.

      Co-organiser: CRM, Rome (Centro Richerche Musicali): CRM welcomes in residence the composer Michelangelo Lupone, offers its technical equipment to his disposal as well as personal help for the realization of the piece, takes in charge a musical commission and presents the concert in Rome.
      Co-organiser: LIEM-CDMC, Madrid (Laboratorio de Informática y Electrónica Musical - Centro para la Difusion de la Musica Contemporanea): LIEM-CDMC welcomes in residence the composer Sofia Martinez, offers its technical equipment to her disposal as well as personal help for the realization of the piece, takes in charge a musical commission and presents the concert in Madrid.
      Associated Partner: Gaudeamus Foundation, Amsterdam (Contemporary Music Centre) Gaudeamus assures the commission of Wil Offermans and participates at the diffusion and the circulation of the project in Europe.

      eWave in Granada 2004

        Between October 19th and 24th, 2004, the eWave Ensemble has gathered in Huetor Santillan, Granada, Spain, for a rehearsal week and two concerts. The ensemble has been working together with several local artists including some flamenco musicians and dansers as well a the local 'Banda de Musica'. The concerts were held at the Casa de la Cultura de Huetor Santillan and the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música “Victoria Eugenia” de Granada.
